A Historic House
in Gallipoli
Casa Galateo is a house dating back to the late 16th century with a classic Salento layout, arranged around a courtyard and staircase leading to its panoramic terraces.
In renovating the building, the original structure was preserved and adapted to modern technical and functional requirements. On the walls and on some of the vaults, the patinas of the pre-existing paints used over time have been preserved, reminders and testimonies of the past.
The characteristic loggia that enriches and distinguishes the façade is decorated with anthropomorphic masks with superstitious functions whose origins seem to date back to Spanish prints from Mayan times. Surmounted by a large round arch with a skylight that illuminates the windows set back from the street, this loggia is known as a mignano and since antiquity has acted as a link between the private space of the dwelling and the public space of the street.
